Soiree

Pictures from the Saturday night Soiree at the Chassell French-Canadian Festival.

Adventure Day

These pictures are from the French-Canadian Adventure Day in the Chassell Township Park. What are pies doing at an Adventure Day, you ask. The volunteers were serving pork pies, sugar pies, and pea soup. You know how pea soup is either really good or really bad. This pea soup was really good.

Saturday Workshops

Saturday started with music, dancing, and genealogy workshops at the Chassell Historical Museum and the Oliver House. I was able to hang out to get some pictures of two of the musical workshops and some of the genealogy workshops.

Again, the gentlemen from Quebec were awesome and very entertaining. Luanne Hamel, Elaine Chaput, and Peg Neidholdt had some pretty serious research going on.

Friday Night Reception

Friday night of the French- Canadian Festival was fun, fun, fun. The night was a reception for the band De Temps Antan from Quebec held at the Chassell VFW. These guys visited with everyone and were really fun to hang out with. When they started playing and singing, it was like we were all transported to another place and time.

Thanks guys for such a wonderful evening and thanks to Dave Bezotte for bringing this great group to town.

A full gallery of Friday's nights festivities can be found here.

Historic Trolley Tour

Friday after work, Gabby and I took a ride on the Red Jacket Trolley as part of Chassell's French- Canadian Festival. The tour took us through Chassell, up the Chassell-Painesdale road and across Paradise Road. Our tour guide shared the history of some of the downtown Chassell building as well as many of the farms on the Paradise Road.

Of course my favorite was the Chaput farm (covered in an earlier post). Again, a great job by the organizers, ticket-sellers, and tour guide.

Friends of Fashion

Pictures from the Thursday vintage fashion show by the Friends of Fashion. Also performing was Maple Sugar Folk with their traditional French-Canadian music.

The show was very informative and the work put into the re-telling of Chassell's French-Canadian history was amazing. We are certainly privileged to have such groups in our area preserving the rich heritage of the Keweenaw.

Chaput Farm

The Chaput Farm is one of the farms featured on the French- Canadian Festival (Festival Joie de Vivre) Historic Trolley Tour. Albert Chaput asked if I would take some pre-Festival photos of the property and flowers. We all know Albert does flowers and does them like nobody else. Gabby and I spent an hour or so with Albert walking the property and taking pictures.

Albert is also decorating St. Anne's for a special Sunday morning as part of the Festival. Stay tuned for those pictures as he always makes the church look great.

"Yooper" Anniversary Cruise

Kriss and I took a "Yooper" Anniversary Cruise on the Keweenaw Star. We originally wanted to go on the Sunday that was our annivers- ary, but they did not have enough bookings. We went on Monday night instead which was Senior Citizen's Night. I guess we're getting close, but we're not there yet.

Kriss was happy it was delayed a day because we went south instead of north. The sites south are Michigan Technological University, Coast Guard Station Portage, some great homes along US41, the Messner Barn, (Kriss's favorite), some great homes just outside of Chassell, White City, and the Jacobsville Lighthouse (my favorite).

We also saw several eagles hanging out along the waterway. If you haven't taken the Keweenaw Star cruise north or south, we highly recommend it.

Carl Olson Memorial Adventure Run

Saturday morning, I received a phone call about 8:00 am from Todd of Brassard Media fame saying he was going to the Carl Olson run and asked if I wanted to shoot some pictures. Well I was up, my daughter was up, the event started about a mile from my house, so Gabby and I packed up and went.

The event was fun and very well-organized. I thought my daughter would be a little bored, but she was very excited. One of her kindergarten classmates was even in the kid's race. I must say the kid's race was really neat to watch.

Incidentally, the run is in memory of a guy who is from the same small town of Painesdale as me. He grew up about two blocks from my childhood home so just seeing his name brought back some childhood memories as well.

Pictures from the Houghton County Fair Thursday night. My niece talked me into one of the stomach-churning rides and it was took its toll.

It was a fun night for the kids.

Spiderwebs

For two or three weeks now, I've been noticing these wonderful spiderwebs on my drive to work. There appear to be hundreds of them back lit by the early morning sun. I just couldn't resist any longer and stopped one morning, walked through this field, got my shoes and pants wet for the day and took some pictures.

It is amazing how these tiny creatures can create such beauty. More amazing to me is that these were found about 100 feet off US41 between Hancock and Calumet, MI.

Blueberry Picking

After church on Sunday, the Bosley crew went blueberry picking at the Gierke farm just south of Chassell. The berries are unbelievable this year. Notice the orange ribbon on the bucket and at the weighing stand. Those were to be used to tie next to any wasp nests in the field.

The little girl picking next to us with her grandfather was apparently convinced that every little bug and fly was a wasp because she was finding lots of them. Gabby stayed true to her middle-namesake of Afina (Romanian for blueberry) as she picked plenty herself.
