MTU Winter Carnival All-Nighter

Thursday, Gabby and I did our annual snow statue walk. We were both very impressed with the Phi Kappa Tau statue in Hancock that won 1st Place overall.

Its always fun to see the colored packaging at the fried twinkie area.

And Then There Was Fall

Some pictures of the frost and some other fall goodies on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. We are all thankful the frost has not yet become snow. FULL GALLERY.

Cottage Moon

We've been watching this gorgeous moon rise this past week and went out of our way to get some shots of it rising over Lake Superior. What a beautiful start to fall in the Keweenaw.

My Wife's Flower Garden

After being asked multiple times to take some pictures of my wife's flower garden, I finally did. These are probably even a little past their peak, but she does a nice job.

Send in the Cows

What a perfect picture opportunity. We were invited to a graduation party that was held at Palosaari's Dairy Farm just outside of Chassell. Gabby and I got to visit with the baby cows in their little "houses" and it was just a perfect day. Well...it was perfect until a flock of geese flew overhead and dropped some green goodies on me. The silos were so industrial looking, it almost reminded me of a NASA tour. They say dairy farming has become high-tech and I believe it.

Chickadee Scavengers

Sunday I went out looking for some spring run-off to photograph. I didn't find much, but I did find what looked like a deer carcass rib cage. That was interesting for a bit. As I was getting ready to leave, chickadees came down and started feeding off it. I found if I was quiet and stealthy, I could get closer and closer to the birds.

So...this group of pictures starts off kind of gross and ends up with some standard chickadee birds on a branch pictures.

72-Year Old Snowblower

The person, not the equipment. This is my Dad blowing snow in Painesdale, one of the snow capitols of Michigan.

I hope I'm up to the task when I'm his age.

I suppose I could have offered to help, but it was more fun taking pictures.

Snow at Whitecaps

Some pictures from our day after Thanksgiving visit to Whitecaps Cottage. Bets are on for what type of animal the rock in the second the picture looks like.

Lake Superior sure is beautiful at any time of year.

Cabin Shadows

Pictures of the late fall shadows at the cabin. Even after the leaves are on the ground, the Keweenaw is still a beautiful place.

Painesdale Colors

Even though the colors of the Jeffers Jets are green and white, Painesdale as a town really shows its colors each fall. Visiting my parents, I walked around some old walking trails to capture some falls scenery.

Gabby and the Dogs

Some quick pictures from last weekend when mom was out of town with her sisters. Gabby posed with the dogs for a few and then we went for a walk as the sun was setting (as you can see from the long shadows).

St. Anne's Processional

Pictures from the Sunday morning pro- cessional and mass as part of the Chassell French-Canadian Festival. Albert Chaput decorated the church in wonderful fashion.

Historic Trolley Tour

Friday after work, Gabby and I took a ride on the Red Jacket Trolley as part of Chassell's French- Canadian Festival. The tour took us through Chassell, up the Chassell-Painesdale road and across Paradise Road. Our tour guide shared the history of some of the downtown Chassell building as well as many of the farms on the Paradise Road.

Of course my favorite was the Chaput farm (covered in an earlier post). Again, a great job by the organizers, ticket-sellers, and tour guide.

Chaput Farm

The Chaput Farm is one of the farms featured on the French- Canadian Festival (Festival Joie de Vivre) Historic Trolley Tour. Albert Chaput asked if I would take some pre-Festival photos of the property and flowers. We all know Albert does flowers and does them like nobody else. Gabby and I spent an hour or so with Albert walking the property and taking pictures.

Albert is also decorating St. Anne's for a special Sunday morning as part of the Festival. Stay tuned for those pictures as he always makes the church look great.

"Yooper" Anniversary Cruise

Kriss and I took a "Yooper" Anniversary Cruise on the Keweenaw Star. We originally wanted to go on the Sunday that was our annivers- ary, but they did not have enough bookings. We went on Monday night instead which was Senior Citizen's Night. I guess we're getting close, but we're not there yet.

Kriss was happy it was delayed a day because we went south instead of north. The sites south are Michigan Technological University, Coast Guard Station Portage, some great homes along US41, the Messner Barn, (Kriss's favorite), some great homes just outside of Chassell, White City, and the Jacobsville Lighthouse (my favorite).

We also saw several eagles hanging out along the waterway. If you haven't taken the Keweenaw Star cruise north or south, we highly recommend it.

County Fair Time

Pictures from the Houghton County Fair Thursday night. My niece talked me into one of the stomach-churning rides and it was took its toll.

It was a fun night for the kids.
